The people in Benin place a high degree of importance on spirituality and the practice of religion.  They believe it is an essential part of their daily lives. Benin is considered the birth place of voodoo and over 60% of the population practice Animism – the religion associated with voodoo. 28.2% of the population identify as Christians and 7% as Muslims.
Out of the 28.2% Christians, 21.7% are catholic,
4% are protestant, 1.98% are Evangelical and
only 1.24% are Pentecostal. Sadly, many of the
“so called” Christians still retain traditional beliefs and participate in ceremonies and rituals.

An example is that of the Voodoo festival is celebrated on January 10th of every year. This day is officially recognized as a public holiday approved by the government of Benin Republic.
